Inquiry, Creativity and Community-Drama Education
An adventure in exploring contexts of Drama. We were out of the campus and exploring Art Instillations, Theatre, Music, Dance and Nature. We came together as a community to share the adventures. Stephen Nachmanovitch quotes Martha Graham in "Free Play", "There is a vitality, a life force an energy, a quickening, that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost"(25).
An inquiry of Play
Our group took to an inquiry of play. "What would happen if we brought in toys, games, dolls and soccer balls?" We wondered, "would people play with these objects?" Would we need to prompt them?" And most importantly, "would it create connections and community?" To our delight, not much prompting was needed and our cohort dove it where they were comfortable and at ease. Some forming big groups playing with lego, while others tossed the ball and picked up a game or two. Play is innate in us all. Stephen Nachmanovitch writes, "Without play, learning and evolution are impossible. Play is the taproot from which original art springs; it is the raw stuff that the artist channels and organizes with all his learning and technique"(Freeplay, 42).
